It started out slowly but it got really intense later in the book. I got very invested in the characters and the story and I was very upset over some things that happened in the book, but omg how I love the story. I've only just finished the first book and I hear that it gets even better later so I can't wait to read them, but at the same time, I never expected this book to be so dark and emotional, and I'm almost afraid to continue because I feel like it's going to break my heart.

Another difficult one to rate... It was a good book, but it wasn't for me. I dislike the mafia vibes, I dislike the turf war and clans and politics and killings and strict societal rules and expectations. I like the family, I think the characters were good for what they were - but I didn't like any of them. I am somewhat interested in finding out what happens to Anden and Bero, but... not so much interested that I would continue with this series. I am interested in Untethered Sky though. Fonda L

Vivid world building, many intricate characters who have crossing interests, and a good sense of past make this a great book. I am, however, a shallow person who prefers to naively cheer for the protagonists, and in this murky world of grey that's hard to do. Maybe these mobbish guys are slightly less evil than the other guys, but then again, maybe not.
