I have to admit I bought this book for the cover. I'd seen some great reviews but I was worried and skeptical - that Fantasy rating kept me weary. But, this isn't fantasy - this is contemporary. It's a story about Daunis and her love of her tribe, her community and her place in it.

Daunis Fontaine's father was part of the Ojibwe tribe and her mother is white. She was raised primarily by her mother but has close ties to her aunt who lives on the nearby reservation and her half brother Levi. When tragedy strikes close to Daunis she is recruited to be a CI by the FBI. I think the author, who is also Ojibwe, did a good job of incorporating that part of Daunis culture into the story. This was a good, heartfelt story. There were times where i just couldn't believe what was happening, and how things were playing out.

This was such a great book!! I loved learning about Native American Tribal history and the traditions that they honor. At times I thought it was a little fantastical but it really didn't matter because I was so engrossed in the story that I just didn't care!! This is Boulley's debut book and I will certainly read her next book.
