Nifty if unexamined concept that a clever device can tell when someone will die the next day. Two boys receive a message and we follow them through the day as they make friends, fall in love, and die. Each chapter gets a time stamp, and in addition to the two boys we see various other points of view, both from doomed characters and characters they meet along the way. Watching the intersections is part of the fun.

This book was absolutely wonderful and I’m glad to have spent time in Silvera’s dystopian (is it dystopian to know when you’re going to die? Maybe it’s utopian) world. The title informs you that both main characters are going to die at the end, and even if you find yourself wondering if it’s possible that they will be the exception to the rule (something many Deckers, as those about to die are called, wonder), that isn’t the point of the book.
