This was another book recommended to me - this time by my friend Jeff who works at B&N. I really liked the world and setting for this story - it was set in Russia and had the various creatures and spirits from Russian folklore. It reminded me a bit of Naomi Novik's Spinning Silver and if you enjoyed that book, you'll like this one as well.

The descriptions were well done - I needed to be wrapped up in a blanket with a hot drink nearby as I read about the characters dealing with the intense cold!

An amazingly well-told fairy tale. Arden does a brilliant job of mixing together medieval Russia and Russian folk customs. In the north of Russia, where the winter fills up most of the year, a wealthy boyar lives with his family. His beautiful wife, with magical powers, dies giving birth to their youngest child, a girl known as Vasya. This was a well crafted retelling of an old Russian fairy tale. I liked reading about the world, the stories, and the characters. I didn’t exactly identify with any of the characters but I liked them and wished them well. I liked that some of the enemies were not necessarily villains but well meaning folks trying to figure out the right thing to do. I loved the spirit creatures.
