I didn't know about this boat tragedy and appreciated learning about it. I also connected with three of the four main characters telling the story (one was creepy and just didn't fit), as well as the shoemaker character. It was a bit difficult with the shifting views as I feel the author didn't differentiate the voices enough, but their unique stories were intriguing and heartbreaking and heart warming wrapped into one. Ruta Sepetys really knows how to tell a story about little known events in history and totally grab your heart and drag you along for the ride. You know that there will be tragedy, because that is what she writes. And the fact is, how could there not be. Life is not a fairy tale where everything ends up Happily Ever After.
