What Members Thought

I didn't know about this boat tragedy and appreciated learning about it. I also connected with three of the four main characters telling the story (one was creepy and just didn't fit), as well as the shoemaker character. It was a bit difficult with the shifting views as I feel the author didn't differentiate the voices enough, but their unique stories were intriguing and heartbreaking and heart warming wrapped into one. I liked this book a lot. The author did a great job bringing the variety of characters to life. As I read the book, the details made it easy to image the terror the refugees felt as they were fleeing violence all around them. Sepetys tells a story that shows how everyday people from both sides of the conflict are caught up in the middle of the violence. It sheds light on an aspect of the war that often gets lost among the other horrible atrocities that occurred during World War II.

This was really good, and the subject matter was something that I actually hadn't heard about before. It's always nice to learn new things. The writing was great, and I felt very emotionally involved in the story.
