I just saw the other day where this book is being turned into a film. I can totally see how this could be a great film.

This book is incredibly intense. Issues of grief, racism, unrequited love, infidelity, sibling rivalry, depression, stress, etc. So many things. All encompassed in one multiracial family. All set in the days of the Carter Administration.

A wonderful book. Not to be read lightly.

I have trouble with books when I don't connect with the characters, and unfortunately, I didn't like any of them. I can understand that during the 70s, the family relationships between parents and children is different from today's perspective. While reading the book, I felt that there were so many times that a conversation between parents, between siblings, between parents and children would have other consequences.
I felt sorry for little Hannah because she was invisible from all of her family.

We see how Lydia's family reacts to her death, each struggling in a different way. And we also see in flashbacks how each character got to that position, including Lydia herself. But we also see the struggles Lydia's parents faced, her father dealing with race issues and her mother dealing with gender discrimination, and how those dynamics shaped their expectations of themse ...more

I'm really wavering on my rating for this book. I'm going to say that it probably more of a 3.5 star book for me. The story was good. The characters were okay/good. I really had issues with the voice the book was written in. It seemed to be told in a narration, but sometimes felt like it switched to first person and back in the same paragraph. ...more

Enjoyable

A quick enjoyable read that reminds you what it must have been like to grow up back when interracial relationships where still frowned upon and children still wanted to please their parents.
