This may be one of the most beautifully written novels that I've read in some time. A friend wrote in her review that this book expresses her desire "to see each person, no matter how damaged, as human" which is a perfect description of this novel. It's exploration of violence, abuse and the prison system is simply stunning. The language just WOW'd me. Denfeld's ability to paint a picture with words is simply breathtaking. The Enchanted was absolutely beautifully written, with an almost magical tone. As the narrator spends more and more time in prison, and is more removed from real life, life itself takes on an "enchanted" quality.

It doesn't really have a significant story arc, but what really makes it is the character development. All the characters each so real, and flawed and haunted. We never get to see why Anders ended up in jail in the first place, or what the other inmates had done that was so horrific, bu ...more
