What Members Thought

Carrie
A little me for me at the start, couldn't get into to it but then bam it took ahold.

From birth until you are 16 years of age you look the way you are meant to, ugly as they call it. Then sweet sixteen roles around and you are taken away and made "pretty", in otherwords you are made to be like everyone else. Not only are you physically beautiful but mentally your mind is changed, you've "grown-up".

Fantastic story, brilliant even.

Plot thoughts:
I was prepared to not like this book all that well. I was initially really annoyed at the overuse of "ies", like uglies, pretties, littlies, etc. In fact, I was really surprised that the specials were not called specialies. The author was inconsistent there. ;) But, I did like it. A lot. I stayed up late last night trying to finish it, and found myself at the computer this morning, seeing what library had the second in so I could go pick it up. It was fast moving, and parts that wo

My review is for the series as a whole. Uglies is the story of a dystopian future. All people go through surgeries at 16 to become pretties - before that they are called uglies, and live apart in special dorms. Tally Youngblood is an ugly on the eve of her 16th birthday. The trilogy tells her story, as she finds a group of people who have not gone through the operation.

Uglies is fairly compelling. I liked tally, and I was interested in her story. The world itself seems pretty poorly realized,

Tally can't wait for her birthday when she gets to have the operation to make her pretty. Everyone in Tally's world gets the operation to make them the ideal beauty once they turn sixteen. At least, Tally thought everyone got the operation. Her new friend Shay likes the way she looks and doesn't want the operation. Shay wants to runaway and find the Smoke, a community of peoples that stay ugly forever. Tally doesn't understand why anyone would choose to stay ugly, but when she is forced to confr ...more

Tally youngblood lives in a world where everyone is considered ugly until they have surgery at 16 to turn them pretty. Tally's friend shay doesn't want to have the surgery and she runs away to the smoke. Tally is then forced to follow Shay and give away the smokes location or she'll stay ugly forever. The writing could stand improvement and the beginning of the book was really slow. The teen love story was boring to me. I did get sucked in by the end of the book so I do want to read the next boo ...more

This was a very thought provoking story, and I liked every bit of it. The characters are well-written and the story very captivating.
