This novel was written nearly 20 years ago, but couldn't be more timely, as it concerns Kevin, a teenager who commits the mass murder of seven fellow students, a teacher, and a cafeteria worker (this is not a spoiler - it's known from the beginning). As Kevin's mother, from whose point of view this story unfolds, thinks at one point, America is "A country that doesn't discriminate between fame and infamy, the latter {presently} itself as plainly more achievable."
