I read Tom Shippey’s J.R.R. Tolkien: Author of the Century a few years ago, but The Road to Middle-Earth: How J.R.R. Tolkien Created A New Mythology is his earlier book on Tolkien, and now that I have read it, I think I should have started with this one. This a great book and I am sure I’ll read it again someday.

The first two chapters are about philology, the comparative study of languages to understand their evolution. These chapters are informed by Shippey's tenure at Oxford which overlapped ...more

Tom Shippey is essential reading for any fan of Tolkien’s works. In this work, he responds to Tolkien’s critics and expands the boundaries of study for his works. It is a sense work that took me quite a long time to work though when compared to his Author of the Century book.

It is here that Shippey delves deeply into philology - a study of words that was abandoned (suppressed?) by academics many years ago. It was a subject Tolkien was passionate about and one that Shippey commits this book to c ...more
