I've read Tolkien's standards and they have always appealed to me and in some ways it was more a feeling than an actual understanding of why. I moved on to HoME and many of Tolkien's translations, such as Beowulf, Sigurd, and the Fall of Arthur with more to come, such as Kullervo and Sir Gawain.
I recently read Shippey's "The Road to Middle-Earth" and followed it up with "Author of the Century".
These books helped me better understand in some ways that feeling.

A great analysis, discussion, and defense of Tolkien's books. It's good for both Tolkien super-geeks like me or just general fans: Shippey explains everything you need to know to enjoy the book, and get a lot more out of Tolkien. A lot of what he focuses on are different sources for the works, such as words since Tolkien was a super-philologist, themes of the books, and arguments against Tolkien which Shippy defends against.

This is such a good book to increase one's appreciation of Tolkien. It made me want to be a philologist. If/when I finish up my degree I'm switching to philology. That is, if there's a college that offers it, lol.

Note the title: author of the century. Not "The author of the century" the author of this book is apperently trying to be respectful while asserting that JRR Tolkien as a Fantisy author spoke more to the people of the 20-21st century then most other authors because everyone can get something different out of it.

A little too hagiographic, perhaps, but Shippey's a good author and he can at least make the case that Tolkien has had a near overwhelming influence on fantasy in the last century (mostly for the better, I think).
