Tolkien's The Children of Húrin is probably the best book for people who want to discover more of Middle-earth, the world in which Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit inhabit, but find approaching The Silmarillion (or worse, The History of Middle-Earth series) intimidating or even a little frightening.

Awesome book in a Kept-me-up-all-night-thinking-about-the-characters kind of way. But emensely sad, I would only recomend it if you like that sort of thing, or are interested in Tolkien's work. Because, if you read this book by itself, you will hate it. If you see it as part of a bigger story, then you may have a greater understanding of the trechery of evil, and the sorrow of virtue and rightiousness.

For those who enjoyed The Silmarillion, this book is a special treat. The fleshed out version of the tragedy of Turin is beautifully written, even though extracted from Tolkien's unpublished works. One of the most moving stories of the Silmarillion, The Children of Hurin is as emotive as it is lofty. Thoroughly enjoyed.
