The Lord of the Rings dominant theme (for me) is attempting the impossible, feeling the anguish of defeat, but continuing to try anyway. And in the end, when all is dark and gloomy, finally the happy moment arrives when you finish the task, overcome the trial, arrive at the destination. But there are many other inspiring messages and themes in this great book. Each reader will find their own.

Aside from the Mormon cannon of scripture, I have found this trilogy to be the most enlightening, the mos

I had originally read The Lord of the Rings in its three volumes as if they were separate novels, and that's how I thought of them. I just finished rereading it all in one stretch, and I was struck as I reached the last chapter by how much it really is a singular novel broken into parts rather than a series. So much has been written and said about it (not to mention the Oscar winning movies), that I feel at a loss to add much. This is a wonderfully imaginative tale, a fully realized world th ...more

I first read the Lord of the Rings when I was nine, and the movies have only enhanced my enjoyment of this classic trilogy. It is the standard by which I compare all other Sci-Fi/Fantasy books, and the greatest literary work of the twentieth century. Most people have seen the movies by now, and so know the plot of the books more or less well. If you haven't read it, then READ IT! It's better, and more original than most other books of its genre, and reading it will bless you immensely. ...more

What a wonderful discovery it was to read this book, shamefully, after watching the movie. Frodo's not a complete pussy, Sam's not a blundering puppyish idiot, Pippin and Merry have more than two emotions and every character has a read depth and personality.
The plot soars from the first sentence and never once loses altitude, sweeping the reader on to a wonderful, exciting and beautiful adventure in a land so well described it can't help but feel true.
This is a must read to anyone with a brain

Not going to lie, I read these because I saw the first movie and absolutely adored it. I wish I'd had someone back in the day that said "hey, read these, you like them" but I didn't. I've read them six or seven times since the first time and I love them to little pieces and anticipate many future readings. ...more
