The Silmarillion is an entire history of elves and men from the beginning of the world to the beginning of The Hobbit, It does feel, at times, as though you are reading a history book. I wouldn't recommend this book unless you have the time to read it all at once or in several long sessions. It's not easy...but it is oh-so-worth it. It's a wonderful book--kind of like the Bible and its contemporaries, except much more interesting to me. Some people have said that what made Lord of the Rings, and even The Hobbit so deep and intriguing was the allusions of the past. Bit of a mixed bag to me - I'm not patient or passionate enough for the epic poems. This book is the test of a true middle earth Tolkien fan (which I am not) as opposed to a LOTR Tolkien fan (which I am).
