Read at the same time as the Silmarillion, which is something I highly recommend. Tons of maps that take you from the first age through the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings.
I read it for the second time on my most recent reading of the Hobbit and LOTR, and I found it very helpful to help visualize the movements of all the characters. Outside of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, I feel like I want to qualify every Tolkien or Tolkien focused book as one for those of us who want more and can't ever get enough - Tolkien Geeks.
The Atlas of Middle-Earth is amazingly meticulous, maybe only second to the Professor himself.
It is organized by First, Second, and Third Age, and then has Regional Maps, followed by maps specific to The Hobbit and LOtR. Finally, there are Thematic Maps and a good Appendix including Selected References, ...more
