I decided to try something out by Brandon Sanderson, who will be completing Robert Jordan's immense Wheel of Time epic. Elantris is his first book, and a stand alone, which is nice-- I'm sick of people thinking that fantasy can only be written in series with more than three books (but of course, the publishers want to make more money, and a series is the best way to do that, from what I hear). I'm not very well-read when it comes to fantasy, but I'm trying to remedy that (Hoping to read WoT, Malazan, and Sword of Truth). I have a stack of Brandon's books on my shelf, but I thought I should try to knock of some of the shorter stand-alones before getting into a series.

It has been awhile since I've read a solid fantasy novel. Elantris completely surpassed my expectations. In his debut novel, Brandon Sanderson incorporated all of the elements a good book should have: unpredictability, courage, deceit, betrayal, war, heck- it even has a little romance.
The characterization was astounding. I often felt like the characters I was reading about were people I really knew.
