I've been reading and rereading The Lord of the Rings since I was 10.
It's been years (decades?) now since I've actually gone back to the novels. I was prompted in this instance by listening to a podcast called "The Film is Lit...erature," which comments about books made into film. I've been listening to LotR episodes. ...more

This is definitely my favorite out of the three in the series. I first read it in high school and became completely obsessed. Later, the movies came out. Peter Jackson did a great job displaying Middle-Earth.
Tolkien originally wanted the three books to be one complete book. The publisher didn't agree and forced Tolkien to separate it into a trilogy.

The fellowship of the Rings is broken up into two books, the first of which I found slow and very difficult to get through. Being the American entertainment junkie that I am I much preferred the speed of the films. Now book two is quite a different story. The second book gave insight that I thought was amazing. Of course book one is necessary for the full enjoyment of book two.

In my opinion, Tolkien is the best writer there is.
