Such a good book with a slightly different take on your average teen age vampire. with every book you will get more and more hooked! I liked that this was a refreshing "up yours" to the Twilight series, or at least that is how it felt to me.
As embarrassed as I am to it admit it, I'm not going to lie-- Twilight is what turned me into a fantasy reading junkie. I appreciate that it ignited my dormant hunger for reading and led me to devour (better) sci-fi and fantasy. But anyway, all the reservations and problems I developed with vampires and vamp-romance have thankfully been righted by Miss Hocking.

Things I liked:
-Alice is a I liked that this was a refreshing "up yours" to the Twilight series, or at least that is how it felt to me.

Things I liked:
-Alice is a realistic character and doesn't fawn all over her love interest like a brainless twat. Personally, I always hated that Bella was a single-minded, unreasonable, martyr... so I have a lot of respect for the characters that Hocking creates because they are realistic (somewhat anti-heros), have hilariously humanizing opinions/reactions, and just believable and interesting because of their quirkyness and how they seem to be shaped by their environment/setting.
-These vampires and the overall tone of the book are unpretentious.
-I like the sarcasm and observations of the first-person voice.
-Although there's the inevitable love triangle every paranormal romance is expected to have, this one has a fresh spin to it... which is ya know, refreshing. I don't want to give anything away but I think I can predict how it will end (or how I want it to), but then again I haven't come across this exact scenario so who knows... and because of that I am looking foreward to seeing how this all plays out.
-And of course-- I'm in love with Jack's description as a boyish, new wave listening, gamer, Dickies shorts and skater socks wearing vampire. Not what you'ld expect, right? I'm hoping he'll get a little more depth in the next book though. Just cuz I like my characters extra depthy.

Only thing I can say I disliked was that the first third of the book kind of drags on till anything exciting happens. Also I want more character development and feel like they are not particularly multi-fasceted, but perhaps that is yet to come (this is only the first of the series). And I feel that we've only skimmed the surface of the vampire world... if it doesn't delve any deeper I'm going to be disappointed. ...more

At first I didn't want to read it, because I expected something like Twilight or The Vampire Diaries, and it did have some similarities. But, I really liked it! I thought it was really cute, funny and dramatic. And I look forward to read the rest of the series! ...more
