Mark and Stephen (from I Spy series) is -- in my humble opinion -- one of the most melancholic couples of Josh Lanyon's. I always feel that their story has a somber mood. Maybe because Mark used to have a dangerous life, which follows him even he had decided to retire. Then there is the age gap between him and Stephen, which could play into Mark's insecurities.

I read Josh Lanyon’s I-Spy series in the wrong order as I came to this, the third book, first. But actually it doesn’t matter. You can read this as a stand-alone novella without already knowing the background of the main characters.
