This is a jewel. This short story is incredibly intense. In a few pages, Tim comes literally alive with all his flaws and past trauma, and Luke, whose point of view remains outside of the story, comes alive with his keen spirit of observation and his caring compassion. In a few pages, I felt invested in their story and in their future, I watched with horror and fascination how Tim was coming apart and Luke was trying to keep him together during a trip which should have been harmless, where the d

In a Dark Wood is probably my favorite among Lanyon's shorter works. I remember reading it for the first time and realizing that this funny, charming guy Tim is actually a drunk. It was heartbreaking to see him slowly disintegrate and finally accept his problem. It's rare that alcoholics get as much understanding as Luke gave to Tim. Very vivid pictures of horror. The suspense grabbed and yanked me into the woods, and, for a short story, it felt most complete. Glad to see there is a sequel. What seemed like a light, contemporary date in the beginning ended up with more depth than I expected. And the addressing of one of the MCs coping mechanism was sardonic, but realistic. I should gave known. Read like some of the old time gothic novels I used to read when I was younger. Very good.

I love this shorty, Tim was such a mess, wow! Good he meet Luke, who made him face his own demon from his, childhood, past!!

This is a fast paced, light romance between Luke, a cop, and Tim, a journalist/writer. On their first date Luke takes Tim back to the woods of Tim past. Overall, this was a solid, but to short written story. I liked it!

3.5 stars.
As always I loved the writing. The scary story was really good but I need a sequel for the relationship since it is left hopeful (with a lot to overcome) but not quite secured. I'd love to read about Tim's recovery and get more insight into Luke. ...more
