Okay, I'm on page 5 and have just finished meeting D for the first time. These first page were so descriptive that it took me a minute to realize that for the first time in many, many books, I wasn't just skimming through the words but actually taking the time to focus how the words fit together to create a picture. I'll be the first to admit that I have overly high expectations for this book based on the ratings and reviews on GR. I had a very hard time finishing this book--it took me days, which is very unusual for me. A few things kind of ruined this book for me. First, D's speech pattern is very irritating. He completely lacks the ability to articulate thoughts or words. He can barely do more that grunt.

First class action/adventure, I thought. The story takes it's time and is not without its twists and turns, but even so it remains taut. The main characters are complex and interesting enough, and grow enough, that I didn't find my interest in them flagging. So a good story, good characters, and bits of brilliant writing? I can't' ask for more than that.
