When I read the first edition I loved the fresh take on vampirism. The new virus, Human Hemovore Virus (HHR) Is the latest life threatening and life altering virus to plague humankind. It has changed how people interact even more than the HIV virus has.
I enjoyed the authors exploration of what life living with the virus is like for V-positives and what it is like for V-negatives and how this

So this was very different.

Hemovore is story that presents vampirism as a virus. And people are either V positive or V negative for the HHV virus. In this world people wear gloves all the time and even masks. they carry antiviral hand gel, and clean their clothes in something similar. They carry sanitizing wipes... it doesn't sound so different than the world we live in, does it? Mark Hansen is V negative and works for the brooding V positive artist Jonathan Varga. Mark is obsessive about keepi

A somewhat melancholy and surprisingly engrossing read.

What makes this vampire story “sci-fi” is that the condition is caused by a human virus similar to HIV but more readily contagious. It is transmitted sexually and through exposure to bodily fluids. It can be fatal; those who survive the early stages become vampires, of the drink-blood-and-avoid-sunlight variety. Because they are humans with a disease instead of mythical creatures of legend, society has no problem believing in their existenc

Mark Hansen is delighted with his job as personal assistant to Jonathan Varga. He is sure his life will be filled with glamor. Instead, he finds that Jonathan does not have a social life. He rarely leaves and does not attend outside events. He refuses all interviews and photographs. One look from Johnathan and Mark will do whatever he wants. He will not drink supermarket blood, only cat’s blood. He enjoys painting his black paintings, which only a vampire can enjoy.

Then one small article sets up

Jordan Castillo Price always delivers amazing world-building, and Hemovore is no exception. In a world where the emergence of HIV/AIDS is overshadowed after only a decade by HHV — human hemovore virus (casually known as vampirism) — love (and life in general) has become exponentially more complicated.

Jonathan and Mark feel a little less complex than Jordan's later characters, but they're still fully realized people. In fact, one of the things that I liked a lot about the book was (view spoiler)

This started a little slow--I was wondering what was going to happen between Mark and Jonathan, and how their everyday life could warrant a book, but I shouldn't have had any doubts. The story really explodes into action with such a twisty, exciting path and so many interesting characters--I am in awe of Jordan Castillo Price's storytelling abilities. I love the PsyCop series, so it shouldn't surprise me, but to take a V-positive artist and his pining assistant and then to whisk them off on this ...more

Hemovore is taut thriller that's set in an alternative universe Chicago where vampirism exists, but unlike in stories like Dracula or Twilight, vampirism is a virus, and most who catch it don’t survive. Those who do are more like the vampires we know from pop culture--subsist on blood, allergic to sunlight, beautiful, and with attuned abilities such as strength, speed, or higher awareness.

There are a lot of allusions to HIV with the vampire virus since it can be transmitted through body fluids.
