Really liked this on first read, it went straight onto my favourite shelf. I enjoy characters that are different from each other, getting past their predjudices and this has a nice element of hurt/comfort too.
On re-reading I skipped some of the dance, I neither know nor care what dance is what, and dear Laurie is a tad precious. But I still enjoyed it a great deal.

Describing this book in one word: Riveting. This is a realistic, slow build romance. Ed is an ex-football player with a bad neck injury, and his life revolves around the pain of it, whether he likes it or not. Laurie is an ex-competitive dancer who is unsure where to go with his life when everyone else seems to know what's best for him. Laurie and Ed teach different kinds of classes at a local community center, and they hate each other. But as they start to dance together on a dare, they begin t

4 1/2 stars. There was so much to like about this book and a few bumps in the road.
The writing was good.
The plot was well thought out and engaging. I liked the realistic treatment of a series injury and its affect on the quality of life. Ed's fighting his limitations fit his character. His bouts of pain and depression felt real. Laurie's attempts to help and feelings of helplessness were also real. Laurie's internal fight against his own demons was an integral part of his reactions to every t ...more

I love Heidi Cullinan's books. I really do. This one is not my favorite. I'm glad it's not the first one of hers that I've read, otherwise I probably would not love her work as much as I do.
I didn't connect as easily with Ed and Laurie as I usually do with her characters. I do like that Ed was secure with his sexuality. Most gay jocks are not written as such. I like that he and Laurie took their time building their relationship.

Listened to the audio version of this. Loved Laurie and Ed. I read about this couple as side characters in Lonely Hearts and wanted to know more about them. Thought it was a great portrayal of one character learning to overcome a humiliating occurence from his past, and the other learning to accept and live with the fact that his life will never be the same after a injury.
p.s. Iggy Toma is a fabulous narrator. If you like audios he is one to listen to.
