I liked the writing, loved the characters-- especially Harper, the author had me fooled with who Joan was and I really liked that, the secondary characters were great, but man, I hate worlds that are so bleak and that have such class distinctions with no hope of that ever changing. I'm glad Harper was able to make a small difference and that he and Belimai will get their HEA, but what about the rest of the world? Add in religious torture and I finished the book feeling kind of depressed actually

Once again, I am in awe of the intricate world building that Hale has deftly managed to weave in a mere 200 pages of elegant prose. The slightly unusual format of two shorter stories combining to form one book, complete with a switch in perspective, was an expected but pleasant surprise.
