I have had this book on my kindle for about a year, I am so sorry I waited so long to read both this and book 2. Ms. Hale is one of those writers who can create a world so rich and alive, that pulls you in so completely that you forget you are reading a book and are surprised when you realize you are not at the Academy or walking through the markets of Anacleto.

Back in the day I read a ton of (high) fantasy but have cut back drastically in recent years. Part of the rationale is that I don’t want to spend time immersing myself in a new world when the resulting story may not be worth it. My reading time is precious, dammit. Except that all I have managed to accomplish is reading lots of mediocre books in a narrow set of genres whilst totally ignoring potential gems in other genres.

So, I have had a change of heart and decided to take the plunge with Lord
