I have recently read a bunch of releases that were written during the early stages of the COVID pandemic and where the authors have admitted it was a struggle to write. I can only imagine how tough it was and I have a great deal of compassion for what was obviously a difficult writing experience. This series is probably my all time favourite series written by my all time favourite author. The bar is set stratospherically high with this one and the years of I have mixed feelings about this book. This series is probably my all time favourite series written by my all time favourite author. The bar is set stratospherically high with this one and the years of anticipation since the last book ... only serves to exacerbate those already very high expectations. I love Sam and Jason ... but there wasn't a whole lot of progression in their relationship in this book. The ending left me somewhat unsatisfied (hence the 3 star rating) I was disappointed by the cliff-hangerish ending. Sometimes, the mystery (and all the various tangled threads) bogs down the reading experience and I felt that happening here. While I loved the nostalgia, romance, and magic of film ... it did drag in parts. But I did love the lunch scene with the old Hollywood stars, that really came alive for me. But I found myself longing for something more. Some missing magic that I have come to expect from this series. As Sam opens up, I find that he's actually harder to understand and relate to. But I also feel like we are leading towards something that isn't quite clear yet ... and perhaps that is at the heart of the frustration ... it is a really long wait to get resolution and I am starting to worry that it might never come. However, in the hands of this skillful author, I know it will ... it is already an amazing series and one that I have thoroughly enjoyed so far. This may have not been my favorite book in the series ... but it is a spectacularly good series nonetheless and a fun read. Definitely, looking forward to the next book and end to COVID times. It's definitely taken its toll on all of us and I am immensely grateful all my favourite authors have found a way to write through the pandemic. ...more

The long awaited book 5 of The Art of Murder series. This one was as intriguing as ever but it also adding more plots than solving it.
