Thoughts after reread 02.05.2023
Poor Will. He just can't seem to help himself. He keeps trusting Kim, while the other man is up to no good. It's so clear from the start. I mean it was to be expected that Kim would do something shady again and Will would be once again blindsided.
Will's memories of WWI are of course horrifying and we haven't learned a thing in the last century.
Phobe and Maisy are refreshing female sidekicks. Not too annoying, but then I do wonder a bit about how modern their tho Thoughts after reread 02.05.2023

Honestly, I liked it more during the first read. But that may be because I am just not in the mood. Still, it was quite awful to read about what Will went through. How do you get back on your feet after the war? I think Will had morals. Of course, Kim's actions were more noticeable this time through. I still think the villains were stupid and the so-called good guys were not better. I wonder how those two will get everything settled. I mean Kim just doesn't seem to be able to help himself... and Will falls to his lies every time. He does, yes eventually understand what Kim is up to, but Kim seems to be so many steps ahead of him, that I have no idea how that's going to work out.

K.J. Charles has written some of my favorite books....and sadly some books that are complete misses for me. So these days I'm a bit careful when I pick her books up. This wasn't a miss. Yay! I liked it.

It was heartbreaking to read about what Will faced once he got back from WWI. His uncle seems to have been a decent man. Will inherited his uncle's bookshop with its 40 000 books or so. And then the troubles started.

The villains seemed dumb to be honest and the so-called good guys really weren't any better. Come on there were about 40000 books...

Will was a likable character. Though there were so many moments when I was like: "No don't do that; don't go there; why are you not seeing the obvious..." Eventually, he did see-through and then fell for the same thing again.

Now Kim. What a piece of work he is. I think he is the slippery creature. It's like he can't help himself. He played Will so well. It was like watching a textbook case of how to con somebody.

Will continue with the series. Look forward to seeing more Will and Kim. ...more

K.J. Charles gets me every time. Her books are just so we'll written, that you just hold on tight for the ride.
Darling was utterly wonderful and Kim a lovely "bad" guy. And that is the thing... Charles' characters are quite multifaceted and evolved. When they are best, they are not just good or bad, but human with warts and all.
Can't wait for the next Darling Adventures. ...more
