What Members Thought

This book is the Think of England dynamic without the likeability of those characters. The whole book is based on Will being stubborn and uncooperative without ever feeling like there's a deeper reason to it. He's not stupid but lets himself get played when it couldn't be more blatent. I disliked Kim and don't understand trusting him. For me the book was boring, I kept getting a nostagic hint of past mystery writers coupled with the strong impression Charles was writing 'in the style of' rather

I really enjoyed this! Well written and engaging with one very frustrating main character. I liked Will as the protagonist and wanted nothing more than to be able to help him organize his bookshop. It’s the librarian in me, I can’t help it! I would like to see more of his one friend in the next book. I’m afraid I’ve gone and forgotten her name, but there needs to be more of the sneaky milliner!

4.5 stars. I enjoy this more every time I listen.
I received an ARC with the understanding I would post a review.
It took me a little bit to really get into this, which is unusual for me with Charles's books, but by the end I couldn't put it down. I'm not sure if it started slow or if I was having trouble getting out of my head space from the previous series I was reading, but I didn't get pulled in as quickly as I normally do. I like the characters of Will and Kim. And a surprise to me is liking the women in an m/m novel more than the MC’s. Maisie and Phoebe are written as normal women friends!
The mystery in this book fell a little flat. The only interesting thing for me was exactly where the information was initially hidden. I knew what would happen to the info once it was found so I didn’t ever feel any urgency.

This was a great historical mystery. The romance is a slow burn, so slow that I wouldn't even consider this a HFN. With Kim engaged to another character and only admitting to actually liking Will by the end of the movie and Will definitely still unsure whether to trust Kim, it is up in the air. But I loved the mystery, and I can't wait to see how the series goes from here.

K.J. Charles gets me every time. Her books are just so we'll written, that you just hold on tight for the ride.
Darling was utterly wonderful and Kim a lovely "bad" guy. And that is the thing... Charles' characters are quite multifaceted and evolved. When they are best, they are not just good or bad, but human with warts and all.
Can't wait for the next Darling Adventures. ...more

Very nicely done. Some suspense, some romantic elements, characters with shadowy motivations, all set in a post WWI backdrop. I love Charles' use of period appropriate slang.
