July 2021 Re-read in preparation for book 3.

Hallelujah, I read a book! Thanks to pandemic brain I’ve had an exceedingly hard time reading at all. I started two weeks ago and stalled near the beginning. Praise be a question from Vivian got me to restart this morning and I read the whole thing.
This hit my sweet spot so hard. Tough guy, too stubborn to give up and smart enough to stumble his way through with a bit of help from an enigmatic bastard too twisty to be trusted and too ent ...more

I really enjoyed this! Well written and engaging with one very frustrating main character. I liked Will as the protagonist and wanted nothing more than to be able to help him organize his bookshop. It’s the librarian in me, I can’t help it! I would like to see more of his one friend in the next book. I’m afraid I’ve gone and forgotten her name, but there needs to be more of the sneaky milliner!

4.5
Wonderful beginning of a historical trilogy. I'm very much looking forward to the sequel.
The writing is clever and the plot full of twists, as usual with K.J. Charles. The two protagonists are flawed, but still very much likeable. The two main secondary characters, Maisie and Phoebe, are well developed, and lovely women, which is quite rare in m/m.
Little negative points: - why should the anarchists be (once more) the villains?
- I also thought that at the beginning Will was too naive ...more

Very nicely done. Some suspense, some romantic elements, characters with shadowy motivations, all set in a post WWI backdrop. I love Charles' use of period appropriate slang.

I'm not sure, if I liked or disliked Kim as a character. He was mysterious and equally kind to Will. They were attracted to eachother, but also tried to build some kind of friends. At the end they decided on friends. Still, the storyline was weird and equally pulling.
