Hallelujah, I read a book! Thanks to pandemic brain I’ve had an exceedingly hard time reading at all. I started two weeks ago and stalled near the beginning. Praise be a question from Vivian got me to restart this morning and I read the whole thing.

First thing first, for someone who doesn't easily believe (or even seems to have strong despise) the people coming to his bookstore over the "information" or those with authorities a.k.a. War Office, Will Darling seems to trust Kim Secretan VERY quick. Not just once, mind you ... I felt that was so reckless. Don't you learn something, Will?

What a ride. Charles brought us another winning duo in this new “The Will Darling Adventures” trilogy set in 1920s England. The story is centered and told from the sole POV of one Will Darling, former soldier turned bookshop owner. It was a rousing game of cat and mouse filled with witty snarks and unexpected twist at every turn. I love a good guessing game SLIPPERY CREATURES gave me that! As the first entry to Will Darling world this book introduced an irresistible line-up of characters along w What a ride. It was a rousing game of cat and mouse filled with witty snarks and unexpected twist at every turn. I love a good guessing game SLIPPERY CREATURES gave me that! As the first entry to Will Darling world this book introduced an irresistible line-up of characters along with the leading man and his potential love interest; also a promising journey our hero was (and would be) facing.

Will thought life after the Great War would be mundane until a couple of strangers popped into his bookshop and demanded things from him. When the enigmatic Kim Secretan turned up at the opportune time to give him a hand, Will thought he found an ally. Only was he?? What followed were the wearing days of him being harassed and assaulted from two directions, not to mention finding out secrets of someone he thought was an honest friend. Alone with the burden of something he knew nothing about, Will must find the answer to his predicament and way out from under the watchful eyes of two dangerous oppositions unscathed.

Charles never let me down with her writings. In this new trilogy, she concocted opposites attract slash frenemies to lovers with the mix of characters and twist and turn of events that got me hooked from start to finish. This reader could tell the good guys from the bad guys (even those in hiding) yet still resenting those on the supposed side of good as I felt so invested in the hero’s well being. Will immediately won my heart, even if he was stubborn as a mule, impulsive, and rather sensitive in a way. Kim was a grey character for me as I questioned everything about him right from the start. That didn’t mean that I didn’t like like him. Au contraire. His portrayal made the story more interesting; the weaving of betrayal upon betrayal but also the rescues amidst the sparking chemistry between him and Will.

I especially loved how the case - or trouble, from Will’s point of view - concluded in the way that did justice to both him and Kim (although I secretly hoped for more candid suffering of the villains than shown here). To sum up, SLIPPERY CREATURES certainly paved the way for more to come in this trilogy and the dance between Will and Kim to get to know one another better. Let me close my account by quoting the exchange between our leading men, just to hint their dynamics.

”My name, since you raise the topic, is Arthur Aloysius Kimberley de Brabazon Secretan. What would you do in my place?”
“Leave the country,” Will said wholeheartedly. “You poor bastard, you never stood a chance.”
