Considering how much I love this series (and re-reads haven't dimmed that) the audio version is really disappointing. It's listenable and that's about it; narrator appears to have a time limit speeding through the book, I've had to rewind a few times to determine who was speaking or if the words were spoken or thoughts.

The blurb didn't appear to offer anything new, too often it'd equal insta-insta with juvenile bravado. But what's actually here is a great mystery the first in awhile that's managed to surprise me. Interesting and nuanced characters and Werewolves blended seamlessly into the reality.

There's actual investigating. The clues are there and can be put together but it doesn't necessarily go exactly as you suspect. I really liked it; it made me think and gave me the satisfaction of linking the clues along with the agents. Any hindrance to the detecting can be put down to prejudices.

Romance-wise there's obvious immediate attraction but not trust. A lot of times when you can see them misinterpret each other, but they're both working against their expectations of the other. Wolves in this verse are 'out' to governments but not to general society.

Cooper our human pov character comes across as a decent guy doing his best with an uncertain role. He's also someone whose first encounter with a Werewolf lead to a serious injury, a life change and biased training. I thought his FBI profiling experience was shown but he's no hot-shot there's clear confidence issues there. So yes, he's often an arse-hole to Park.

Park our Werewolf representative is very self-contained but getting his pov wouldn't have worked for the plot. He's interesting though largely stoic, there's only hints about him. He's attracted to Cooper but is used to preconceptions from those in the know about Werewolves so is expecting the worst and the spikes of attitude aren't helpful.

I enjoyed seeing the dynamic between them change, this is very slow-burn. While the mystery is solved and the couple left on a positive they've still a way to go; it's a good ending with enough closure for those who don't want to continue but I'm very glad there's to be more and look forward to getting to know Park better. ...more

I super enjoyed this!

I'm all about a good shifter romance, and this one was smart and captivating. I thought the world-building was really well done, and I was immediately drawn into the mystery and the chemistry between Cooper and Oliver. There were times where there was a little more case than romance, and times where I found Cooper to be a bit frustratingly thick, but generally speaking, I thought this was great. I started this reread and then suddenly it was 3 o'clock in the morning and I needed to go to work in the morning. So yeah, I can safely say I loved it even during reread.

The thing I found the most fascinating about this book was it's exploration of the relationship between law enforcement and werewolves which certainly parallels the relationships between real life law enforcement and certain groups in our world; mainly the ignorance that breeds fear, bigotry and violence.

All in all, this book was very well written and I do look forward to continue discovering this fictional world. ...more

Excellent

Excellent writing. Excellent storyline. The suspense was outstanding. The characters were believable and endearing. Excellent beginning for a series. I can’t wait to see what other stories this author has to tell.
