Letting go of Sam and Jason is harder than almost any other pairing. Something about these two really kicks me in the heart. I'm sure it's all about the art history. :-P

Anyway, I'm comforting myself writing yet another coda for them...

Finally, after several "nice books", there's another Lanyon's book that I can say "I loved it" to.

As I mentioned in my update, this is the first time I'm quite invested with the ART crime of the story. You see, I was lucky enough to be able to see Vermeer's painting, Girl with a Pearl Earring (and View of Delft) directly at Mauritshuis, The Hague, The Netherlands, more than a decade ago. So I know of Vermeer's paintings.

The fact that this story evolves around the possibility of rediscovery of

Let's accept that readers have just cause to feel nervous about book four in a Lanyon five-book series (or an originally 5-book series). :)

In this episode, Jason has way too much on his plate, not just job-wise, but emotionally. He's juggling his self-justification for withholding information from his superiors, partner, and Sam, while dealing with the ongoing repercussions of having been shot, nearly abducted, injured, and stalked. The strain is about to break him. Or break something.

I love the

Great pacing with a nice balance between the mystery & the romance. And Jason & Sam finally said some things to each other that I've been wanting to hear. I gobbled this right up! Now we anxiously wait for the final book. ...more

Sam Kennedy wasn’t so prominent in Jason West’s ACT case this time, though the two got their time together through the ups and downs. Lanyon just got the way to play with characters’ (and readers’) heart. I mean, through one third of the book I almost felt the hurt and pain our ornery MC must have felt. I’m warming toward West’s partner, JJ. He didn’t let West down in backing him up professionally and even being friendly to West. Case-wise felt a bit liked playing hide and seek with obtuse and g ...more

Jason makes (and rationalizes) some really poor decisions in this one (that then add to the eventual Big Misunderstanding/Communication Breakdown conflict) and that made this installment harder to read. (I put it down for a while and finally picked it up again to power through.) My overall experience with this one tinged by frustration over his decisions that easily forecasted to this reader what was coming next.

I think my favorite of this specific series is still the first book.
