Review for BookWinked
Nooooo the release got pushed baFinally. Finally. Jason West and Sam Kage are back in this second installment of the Art of Murder series. As you may know I was a big fan of the first book The Mermaid Murders and have read it several times now.
The Monet Murders was definitely worth the wait, but it was not quite what I expected. There was a lot of angst in this series. Namely Jasons. As a reader it’s understandable where it comes from. Sam is not the easiest person to get ...more

I decided to reread the first book before starting with this one. It was a very good decision. I've discovered that I always fully appreciate Josh's books by the second read, when I really take my time without the excitement and impatience in reading the new book immediately after it releases.
I actually liked this book better than the first one, even though the mystery in the first book was probably the better one. In this book, however, the characters were fleshed out and became more real and h ...more

3.5 Stars
I’m waffling between frustrated over the overall personal and professional issue and ...not exactly loving it, but accepting where the hot and cold coming from. I can see Sam’s character developed from the unlikable he exuded in Winter Kill, The Mermaid Murders into slightly personable here. If nothing, nobody would doubt his affection of Jason West!! They spoke volume here. Case-wise, it was pretty circumstantial and discounting the incident that lead to the uproar, not really painting ...more

Special Agents Sam Kennedy and Jason West have kept their nascent relationship going long distance by phone since the wrapping up of the Mermaid murders.
When they finally come together again in Santa Monica, when Sam requests Jason as a consultant on a case where the murderer leaves poorly painted Monet style paintings of the murder scene, Jason quickly realises that Sam actually doesn’t want to be in a relationship with Jason after all. There is much angst on Jason’s part as the story is told f ...more

Love this series, love these guys (in all their oft frustrating complexity), love how the mystery is constructed with its overlapping cases. And I love how certain issues are left pending for the next episode.
BTW, if by chance you read the final version from the point that the draft version ended (after Chapter 20) — go back NOW and re-read the final version of that chapter. :)
In previous chapters I noted only a few, very minor, changes in wording, but Chapter 20 is significantly different in co ...more

One of my favorite Lanyon series
The emotional rollercoaster of this book and this particular couple is what had me up until the early morning reading. As an art history lover, I adore this series and the technical parts of the mystery are fantastic.
While there were technical difficulties in obtaining the right version of the book, Josh was 100% transparent and quickly rectified the situation.

I didn't find this one as enjoyable as the first one. The audio narrator did a great job like before, but I found the story a bit more of a slog. Maybe because it was really more mystery than romance since at this stage the "couple" were separated for most of the book, and experiencing some "can we be together" angst when they were together. I like the vibe when they are collaborating on a case (or caring for each other) so this installment felt a bit more dry and not as enjoyable.
