All 10 Amazon reviews are 5 stars. 43 of its 61 GR reviews are 5 stars. So take this dissenting view with the appropriate grain of salt.

This book treads water for the first 80%. There are hardly any developments in the murder mystery and the not-romance goes in very frustrating circles. I really wanted to buy Jamie a copy of He’s Just Not That Into You and hit him over the head with it. Repeatedly. And once his case starts to break, it went pretty much where I expected it to so no brownie points

Gonna chalk this one up as my issue not yours. I found the writing style to be exhausting -- and I always have issues with books that I consider having "British style". My brain is very picky with British style writing and this one just doesn't work, at all. All I saw were words, meaningless swimming words, not sentences.

Plus I heard that this one had (view spoiler) in the relationship front? Well, I don't feel like I miss anything then *shrugs*.

Both the romance and the mystery were well plotted and well written. It's a big book, but never a dull moment. My heart ached, raced as I joined James #hotcop for a exhilarating ride.

A new must-buy author to me :-)

Finally got the chance to (sit down and) read this book. BITTER LEGACY is a glorious debut novel from Dal Maclean. Centered on and told from the POV of one Detective Sergeant James Henderson, the plot weaved and twisted as James trudged through life - personally and professionally. He’s appointed as lead on murder investigation that turned into serial murders while at the same time took first step into a truly meaningful relationship. Only not everything turned up as he planned nor wanted.
