YA is way down on my normal reading lists so although I saw a lot of positive reviews I ignored them until this was free on an amazon-promo, then found I really enoyed it. It never felt dumbed down to me.

Did have a false start where I actually went back to the blurb to figure out the narrator was in fact male and that Kathy was his mother. Their fandom made me think star trek and if I'm being critical I couldn't understand the main character's strong stance against fanfic considering how much th

This earned an extra star for several reasons. First, the cover is just dandy- reflects the book's tone and content quite nicely. Second, where did this author come from. J.C. Lillis deserves credit for writing such a fresh, engaging, and distinctive book.

Third, the use of language here is intricate and lively! You have the jargon of fanfic, which Lillis writes authentically, yet without leaving the uninitiated in the lurch. The universe of fandom emerges in many intricate and ridiculous layers

This was sweet coming-of-age story. It is told from Brandon’s POV and gives the reader a heartfelt view of the anxieties and angst and self-doubt a teenage boy coming to grips with who he is as a person vs. who his family and the community (aka Father Mike and the church) think he should be.
