What Members Thought

A thrilling, pacey read with a rather Gothic feel to it. That steadily building impending sense of doom, the oppressive feeling that something truly horrific is about to happen and... there is no way out -gah! Flashbacks of Victoria Holt and Mary Stewart!!!Loved it! I also loved that, in counterpoint to all that creepiness, the most beautiful romance was unfurling. Great chemistry between the two MC's. Loved them.
Effortlessly awesome writing, a hugely satisfying romance and a thrilling plot.

I'll say only this - Daniel da Silva. Archie is fine, but da Silva is fine. Courage under fire aside, have you ever read about braver man? Smart and funny too. I'd say Archie and Daniel are perfect for each other.

A solid, well-written mystery, with different interesting themes thrown in (anti-Semitism, class differences and so on). The missing half-star is because of some too convenient plot-twists and because I felt a bit detached from the MCs, but the book is there hanging between 4 and 5 stars, so absolutely recommended.

Ha, this story was good one! I liked Curtis as a character, sure he was to swift by judging Daniel so harshly "he’d rarely seen a more dislikable man." But Curtis soon found out that, sometimes the first impression isn't the right one.
Anyway this story was actually pretty good. Also written with intelligence and realistic characters. Curtis and Daniel were good together, I wouldn't mind reading more about their adventures.

This novel is set in the so-called Golden Era, in early 20th century England where being considered a civilized human being demanded being white, male, straight, Christian, and upper-class British—in short, a Gentleman. In those prejudice-riddled times, anti-Semitism was as commonplace as contempt for queer people and distrust against anyone non-white and/or non-British. Literary works of the time often recruit their villains out of these groups.
