This book was lost on me. I know many have enjoyed it and it has won awards, but those attributes were missed by me in this read. I understand this was a historical fiction taken from the actual events at the Dozier School for boys in Florida, but I felt very little was actually included.

The Nickel boys is an enjoyable, easy read, and thought provoking. Our group rated the book 5 stars both because of the writer's style and due to how well the author was able to make the historical context of the book feel relevant to modern issues with race in America. This book is suggested to any reader interested in the African American experience in America and would like more perspective on how that legacy affects modern citizens. The author's matter-of-fact recounting of the brutality endured by the boys at the Nickel School is not for the faint-hearted, but a persistent reader will be rewarded with a story of depth, intensity and importance.
