I closed this book feeling privileged for the rapturous peek into my writing hero's world. As Conroy described the writers and books that shaped his life, I made lists of all the poems and stories I must read. I arrived decades late, and woefully under schooled to my first attempt at novel writing. Because of this, and due to my deep love of every word Conroy pens, I wept, gushed, and sighed throughout. Pat Conroy has stolen my heart yet again, and I am exhausted by this exposition of his litera ...more

I loved reading these vignettes from my favorite author's life! In "My Reading Life," I gathered a sense of how this writer goes about his writing process, which I found incredibly valuable. I've read many of Conroy's books and am in awe of his lyrical phrasing. To me, he is the finest American writer of the current age. ...more

The only reason this did not get five stars is I'm still peeved about this being a collection instead of what it was marketed as: a memoir! Boo!

Aside from that blip, this is a great collection for anyone who loves books. Each article/essay is a love song to Pat's love for reading, and I felt myself grinning throughout at his lyrical celebration of reading. This book would make an excellent gift to anyone graduating college with a degree in English or high school and planning to study English.

As much as I'd like to feel disappointed in this collection - because most of it isn't new - I'm not. It's advertised for exactly what it is, and true Pat Conroy lovers will always appreciate the way he verbally makes love to the books he embraced as a child. Wonderful as always, but I'm still holding out for more new fiction from him in the future! ...more

I need to buy a copy to constantly be referring to and inspired by. I wanted to listen to it over again as soon and I finished it. It left me with the conviction that I really need to write more about the books I read and what they mean to me.
