Over the weekend, I carried this novel with me to a family event where my aunt immediately spotted South of Broad in my hands. Her entire demeanor changed to stone as she told me she was "disgusted" by the ending of this novel and that she considered Conroy to be a snob. As a loyal Pat Conroy fan, I was perplexed; Conroy is never a snob, and how could he disgust my aunt?

While nobody can paint the unique images of lowcountry SC quite like Pat Conroy, the characters and the outrageous chain of events crammed into these 500+ pages were just too much to easily stomach. The almost poetic writing was as beautiful as ever, but the story itself left a lot to be desired.
