What's so amazing about this story is that his father, "The Great Santini" an ornery, regimented bully, LOVED that his son wrote this book. He often told people that he was 'The Great Santini'. His father never truly 'got' the story - that he was an S.O.B. Not loved but feared by his family.

After recently rereading all of his books, I decided this is one of his top two. Bull Meecham is one of the most fully developed characters ever. It takes a gifted author to make a reader love and hate a character simultaneously.

Good, but definitely not my favorite Conroy book. I think it's because this was his first fiction novel written back in the 60's and he has gotten better and better over the years.
