I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in this series, but this book was infinitely better than the last! I am quite eager to start the third book of this series!

I love, love, love this series. The first seemed typical (but enjoyable) YA fantasy. You know the story, the young boy with humble beginnings finds out he's 'special' from the other kids and thus ensues his adventures (with a disguised princess and all!). It's the kind of story set-up that I don't mind revisiting often. So it was with only a few, minor quibbles that I picked up The Exiled Queen. I definitely wasn't disappointed and I'm now eagerly anticipating the next in the series.

It's the kind of story set-up that I don't mind revisiting often. So it was with only a few, minor quibbles that I picked up The Exiled Queen. I definitely wasn't disappointed and I'm now eagerly anticipating the next in the series.
I cannot stress enough however, that it's important that you start with the first and don't pick this one first. You miss the full effect of how much these characters have grown. Raisa is such a wonderful character and I can definitely say one of my fav princesses I've read about (and believe me when I say I've read tons). The one thought that puts my feelings so succinctly in this character is that she demands a lot of the people around her, but she demands more from herself. That was such a refreshing sentiment in this age of wallflower girls in YA that let the menfolk do all the heavy-lifting. Han the young boy with humble beginnings never let's his past get too far away, because he's got plans people! Plans! He's not a one note kinda guy, but the real deal!
Anyway, I'm so impressed with how this series is shaping up! Definitely give the first book a go if you like adventure with great characters and worldbuilding.

Side Rant!!!************SLIGHTLY SPOILERISH*********
I can't let my review go by without saying I had a few quibbles and quite a few moments where I've had to suspend my disbelief for the benefit of enjoying this story. One of the major issues I have is with Han not figuring out Rebecca's identity. Think about it. Amon comes from a major legacy, one that I'm sure Han knows about. Han knows Amon's seriously strung up about Morley and her whereabouts, why else would that be if she wasn't Raisa? Amon's presence should automatically tip-off those around him, especially Micah and his gang. The fact that Raisa got away with practically a whole year of schooling was beyond me. Plus the fact that Han could blithely attend wizard school and not count on it getting back to Micah's father was strange. I don't know, maybe I'm missing something, I thought the stakes were higher and he wouldn't stand a chance of attending school with Micah there and frankly their antics were a low point in the story for me (a little too Draco-esque to me). ...more

Entering into the story we pick up right where the first book left off with the disappearance of the princess, and the chaos surrounding the main character Han. This series is like a big puzzle of building blocks working up to a master plot. Chima is a very interesting writer on this part.
What I'm not liking so much though is the duel plot without separation of who's plot you're following.

Dislikes: I don't like when characters just disappear. I'm sure we'll find out more in the next book but Crow was a major part of Han's storyline and then after a huge scene with him, Han, and the Bayar's he was not mentioned again. I also dislike Micah as the villain. It's not a role that suits him well and does not seem believable, especially when his father and even his sister seem to do it better.
