To be fair, I think my ratings of short stories are a little more convervative than those of full novels. To me, the point of a short story is to expose me to a new author and highlight their work so that I'm going to want to buy their work; if your shorts aren't pretty darn good I'm not going to seek out your novels. I know that shorts are hard to write because there isn't a lot of time for world building, etc, but that's exactly my point - if the author can write a good short that pulls me in

Mixed bag, as most anthologies are.
A few standouts:
Patricia Brigg's "Gray" -- Sadly sweet tale from the perspective of vampire. Takes place in the Mercy Thompson world, but no crossover. Well worth the time spent reading.
Stacia Kane's "Rick the Brave" -- Don't miss your chance to see Chess and Terrible from another person's perspective. Rick's POV was funny and made for an interesting change.
Toni L.P. Kelner's "In Brightest Day" -- I really enjoyed the unconventiality of Dodie, a freckled ho ...more

I have a hit-or-miss record with anthologies, especially those including more than five stories. However, Charlaine Harris and Toni L.P. Kelner consistently manage to pull together a quality collection of short stories. I think part of what helps is the themes.
