Dead Ever After (Sookie Stackhouse, #13) in SOS: Serious Overload of Series

3 1/2 stars. I had heard who Sookie ended up with before I read this book, and as a die hard Sookie/Eric shipper, I was fully expecting that I would really dislike this book. And I was figuring that I'd give it two stars or even one and rip the book to shreds in my review. Now you may be asking yourself, "well then, why did you even read it?" The answer to that is because, I've stuck with Sookie and Co. for 12 books and I didn't want to give up on them with one book left in the series, and I als 3 1/2 stars. I had heard who Sookie ended up with before I read this book, and as a die hard Sookie/Eric shipper, I was fully expecting that I would really dislike this book. And I was figuring that I'd give it two stars or even one and rip the book to shreds in my review. Now you may be asking yourself, "well then, why did you even read it?" The answer to that is because, I've stuck with Sookie and Co. for 12 books and I didn't want to give up on them with one book left in the series, and I also plain wanted to finish this series. And I'm glad that I did. I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that I overall enjoyed this book a fair amount. It's far from the best Sookie book, but it's certainly not the worst either. And I didn't feel as though I wasted time reading it. The mystery was pretty good and who the actual villain turned out to be was a decent twist. (view spoiler) And I think every supernatural of consequence who has ever spent any time in Sookie's life in the past 12 books, who isn't dead, made an appearance in Dead Ever After. And the loose ends for most of them got tied up. And it didn't feel like a monster mash either, their respective appearances felt natural and worked well for the story. And I liked seeing how things ended for everyone. (view spoiler) Now, onto to Sookie and Eric........... Well, I was displeased by the fact that they didn't end up together. Royally displeased. I question why Harris gave us all this buildup, only to have Sookie end up with (view spoiler) It's not that I dislike (view spoiler) I think he's a great guy and all, but he's not who I wanted her to end up with. On the other hand, Sookie and (view spoiler) getting together did kind of work in a strange way. And he's certainly not the worst guy she could have ended up with. And he does give her the best chance at having as normal a life as is possible for Sookie. But if it had been me in charge of who she ended up with? I would have done away with the whole Eric's maker promising him to the vampire queen of Oklahoma story line and of course the Sam getting killed and brought back with the cluviel dor story line. And instead had Sookie use the cluviel dor to grant herself eternal youth and beauty or something along those lines. That way she and Eric could have been together for eternity and Sookie wouldn't have had to have been turned into a vampire. Oh well. I suppose that I can be thankful that Harris didn't introduce another new guy and have that guy be who Sookie ends up with. Oh, and for once, I semi-liked the cover. Tiny spoiler, when Niall went back into Faery forever, he blessed Sookie's land with some kind of fae magic that made her entire yard absolutely flourish and grow like it had been dosed with Miracle-Gro on steroids. And the cover hints at that very nicely. So, in conclusion, after 13 books, do I feel this was a series worth sticking with? Yes. It's had its highs and its lows for sure, but overall, this is a very good series. I can't say this series ended on a high note. Nor can I say it ended on a low note. I think it ended on a middling note. It didn't end as well as it could have and the magic of the early Sookie books is long gone, but it didn't end on a terrible note either. ...more

Seeing how the last two books were turds, I fought with myself.. Do I wanna finish the series? So I went off to B&N picked it up.. Got two chapters in.. And put it back down.

Although I enjoyed earlier books in the series more than these last few, I was pleased and satisfied with the final ending of Sookie's romance life. (I just hope they really get their happily ever after!) ...more

I quite liked the wrap-up of this series. Almost all (seriously) of the characters make an appearance or at least mentioned in the story, and Sookie finally gets an HEA. I'm sure everyone knows who it is but I will tag it anyway: (view spoiler) Which, on reflection, I am happy with. The last in the Sookie series...and for me it was a fulfilling, gorgeous way to wrap it all up. Charlaine Harris did a great job of staying true to her characters. She could have written 500 more pages and I would have happily devoured them. I hated to see it end. It was emotional, joyful, sad and ultimately redeeming. This series is my favorite of all time and I thought this book did it all justice.
