It has been some time since I read the first book in the series so it took a little reading to get back into the characters and figure out what was going on.
Persephone (Seph) Alcmedi has been asked to compete for the high priestess position left vacant by Vivian Diamond who has mysteriously disappeared. Persephone must keep secret what she knows about Vivian. Seph has also acquired her grandmother, a child left orphaned by Vivian and a hunky werewolf. Plenty of surprises in this one.
Seph gets nominated to compete in the Eximium to see who is the best for the High Priestess job that is now available. She really doesn't want to, but after she meets one of the other competitors, she decides to compete in order to knock her out of the running. This is no normal contest. There were some pretty crazy tests. It got pretty exciting.
Johnny and Seph also connect some more, and we learn a lot more about her new duties(?). Totally love Johnny. Yum yum.

SPOILER ALERT!!!!!
Okay, Johnny seriously pissed me off in this book. If he was completely innocent of any wrongdoing, why didn't he just tell her beforehand? Why would he write a song telling her to "trust her heart" or whatever? Why not write a note saying "Hey, I know what that scene at the concert looked like, but here's the real story." Why all this tippytoeing around the issue? I cannot abide cheaters, but if he didn't cheat, why didn't he just tell her? Why do we readers have to spend a go ...more
