How utterly satisfying! Although this is a spin off of Cat and Bone’s series, fret not. Cat, Bones and all our favorite characters are present, accounted for, and for once an author doesn’t just have our past heroes and heroines make a brief appearance to appease us. We get to see their stories move forward along side the new protagonists.

Frost fans will recognize Denise as Cat’s (all to human) best friend who lost her husband during the New Year’s Eve battle and then went on to have a miscarriage. As much as Denise loves Cat, she has sworn off her association with the preternatural community in search of the normalcy she once thought existed. A year after the attack Denise is burying yet another family member and quickly discovers that her very own family’s past history with a demon is going to pull her right back into the world she most wants to avoid. Out of desperation to save those she loves, she turns to Spade, a master vampire and close friend of Bones, whose lack of history with Denise, disdain for humans, and selfish vampire nature reassure Denise that he won’t martyr himself for her should things take a turn for the worst. The last thing Denise can do is bury someone else.

Spade has first hand knowledge of how fragile human life is and how painful it is to lose a human lover. A strict policy against becoming involved with humans has shielded his heart for 150 years from a repeat of that terrible agony. Helping Denise or any human isn’t high on his list of priorities or interests, but his friends Bones and Cat are due a little respite given all they have been through lately and he can see the logic in being the one to help Denise deal with the demon looking to claim a soul he is due.

The first half of the book readers learn more about Spade and Denise as they tackle each challenge and learn to trust in themselves as well as very species they least want to be involved with. And then, true to character, Bones, Cat and Ian come to stand by their friends’ side in their time of need. Cat is still struggling with being a new vampire with overwhelming powers. Womanizing, self-promoting Ian shows us once again that in a time of need he will always stand by his friends. And Mencheres continues to find his ability to protect those in need limited despite his overwhelming powers. Bones is the only character that seems underdeveloped.

I picked it up the afternoon it hit my iphone Kindle and didn’t realize until I reached the last page at four AM how hooked I had become.

First Drop of Crimson by Jeaniene Frost i was really glad that frost decided to explore wit side characters. characters that i knoe that i wanted a little more of is spade, ian, and mencheres. i dont knoe if there will be an ian book though but im hoping! i really liked this book but didnt really until i had gotten through it a bit more like let's say middle-ish. i wasnt so stuck on spade and denise like i was cat and bones. like that feeling u get when u just love a couple in a book. i love spa ...more

Great first book for a new series.
Frost's writing is very easy to follow, the plot was interesting and you can't help but to like the characters.
I liked the happy ending but I would've preferred a female lead a little less martyr-ish!

I liked Denise and Spade, but they are no Cat and Bones. It was cool "the gang" all made appearances and (I thought) made the book more enjoyable. I liked Denise's decision towards the end of the book. She saved herself and realized she didn't need Spade to do it all for her. Yay! ...more
