Surprisingly not a bad start to a series. Wasn't crazy about all the characters. Skylar bugged me. A LOT! She is supposed to be this strong trigger happy female and is brought down with a look by Rico at fifty paces. I am getting sick of strong females that don't even put up a good fight.

Captain Tannis & Al were exceptions in this story. They just weren't included enough. I felt the ending was flat & very obvious.

I liked it but I wanted to like it oh so much more. There's an interesting sci-fi universe going on. I like the setup with the Collective and the Church and the rebels, but it all seemed to end so fast. I wanted more of everything. More of Rico and Skylar. More of the crew and Tannis. More action. More tension. I didn't feel like anyone was ever in any real danger. I feel that none of the characters had time to develop. This might have done better as a full length novel rather than a novella.
