2.5-3 stars - Paranormal/Mystery/Romance
I struggled with how to rate this one. There are some intriguing aspects of the story, but it really dragged at times and could've used some editing. The relationship between Matthew and Diana lacked authenticity, emotion, and passion, and their romance was honestly pretty boring to me. A Discovery of Witches starts out at a good pace, introducing several key elements, Diana Bishop, Ashmole 782 and Matthew Clermont the vampire. The reader doesn't have to wait several chapters before their worlds collide. Yes! I'm on the edge of my seat waiting for the other shoe to drop, but then something happens around the halfway mark--FRANCE. Insert eye-roll. I am about 10 pages into it and am immensely drawn in. This is written to be read by an adult. As I know nothing about libraries at Oxford, I looked up the ones she reference to see if they exist. They do.
I'm a little less than half way through now. I have gone back and re-read everything to make sure I get it all. I have also looked up Oxford University to figure out the colleges.
