I don't know why it took me so long to get moving on this book. I was SOOOOO excited to get my hands on it (finally) b/c I just flew through the first three in the series. I love Terrible and Chess and I love the story, and the brilliant way in which it is written. I think that I couldn't get a move on reading this one because I was hating Chess's decisions. I didn't want her to do some of the things she was doing, so I just couldn't read it. I was also hating Stacia at that moment too - just ki ...more

Stacia Kane doesn't disappoint with this new Downside Ghosts installment. City of Ghosts is still my favorite book in the series, but I was totally engrossed in this novel as well.

Chess and Terrible are still "feeling out" their relationship in this book and, because they are both damaged people, everything is not smooth sailing. Ms. Kane excels in writing heartbreaking, realistic interactions between her characters. Thankfully, she is also quite skilled at writing scenes full of love and hope a

Chess's boss is gay and apparently it is okay with the church because he's actually getting married and he's announcing it to her without asking for secrecy or anything!

I love how fallible she is, how insecure and self-hating and that she uses drugs to deal with it. It all feels realistic with her past and what she's doing now. She's the first MC I've read about who doesn't kick the drugs in the first book or before that yet the drugs aren't glamorized at all. I personally am horrified by drug a

The story of our favorite anti-heroes continues.

Chess is dragged into another case by her drug dealer that somehow ends up related to the case she's working on for the Church. She is pretty good at her job, despite her numerous personal problems.

She is as self destructive as in the previous books but even more insecure now that she's in a relationship. She's constantly worrying that it will end and ends up complicating it needlessly because of her fears and extremely low self esteem.

I've loved the first three in this series, like in a totally-annoying-fangirl-love way. And yet….this book didn't manage to rekindle all the old feelings and aspects that I loved from the first one. Yes Chess has some serious self-esteem issues. yes Terrible is a man of few words, but the issues between them here were like two steps forward, fifty steps back, not to mention it took me forever to want to continue on with the main plot because it didn't really capture my attention. The story did p ...more

At times, I was really over Chess's angst, but it was true to her character (as written). I am looking to see if there is more than incremental growth in her character for the next couple of books.

I hope so.
