Wow, what a start this book gets! I was terribly confused when there was a paranormal twist to this book. I wasn't expecting it at all.

The story of Gemma Doyle was at times sad (loss of mother), familiar (new school / making friends) and others enchanting (finding a "land" where anything is possible).
Favorite Quote: "there are no safe choices ... only different ones"
Certainly the message that "in each of us lie good and bad, light and dark, art and pain, choice and regret, cruelty and sacrifice" and the power of forgiveness are strong ones that resonate to all ages. ...more

This was a great and easy read. Teenagers dealing with angst and parents who don't love them or don't understand them. Escaping from their problems into magical realms which give them the power to feel powerful for a while, as oppossed to the constant feeling of being powerless - everyone else is deciding how they will live there lives. Gypsy's, psychic powers, victorian england, dead people, mysteries, magic - what is not to love.
